New parking meters designed to keep Whitehorse cars moving

Dave Pruden, the city's bylaw manager, says the new meters are the result of a 2011 parking management plan approved by the city. The idea is to prevent people from leaving their cars in parking spots all day.

The City of Whitehorse is installingup to 70 new parking metersdowntown.

Dave Pruden, the city's bylaw manager, says the new meters arethe result of a 2011 parking management plan approved by the city. He says theidea is to prevent people from leaving their cars in parking spots all day.

"When we look at why we put in meters, it's to ensure the rotation of traffic downtown so that peoplecoming downtown to do business and day-to-day shopping have a place to park without circling theblock several times to find a spot, or park several blocks away to run in for a few minutes," Prudensaid.

The new meters will allow parking for three hours, unlike the two hours at most other meters -at the same cost as existing meters: $1 per hour.
