Marijuana grow-op found in Yellowknife couple's home, police say

A Yellowknife couple will likely face drug charges after RCMP discovered a marijuana grow operation in their trailer home Thursday, police say.

A Yellowknife couple will likely face drug charges after RCMP discovered a marijuana grow operation in their trailer home Thursday, police say.

RCMP Sgt. Vic Steinhammer said officers were called in for another matter, when they discovered 20 marijuana plants and a "large quantity" of cultivated marijuana in a trailer at the Northlands Trailer Court.

"It's my understanding that this certainly does not happen up here," Steinhammer said Friday.

"With the prices up here of electricity and so forth, this just doesn't happen very often."

A 40-year-old man and his 34-year-old wife were arrested Thursday, according to a police release. They have since been released from custody and are scheduled to appear in court on April 7. Their names were not released.

Steinhammer saidpolice are still investigating and haven'tyet madea recommendation to the Crown aboutcharges.

Also on Friday, RCMP said they laid drug charges against two other Yellowknife residents in connection with a separate bust last week.

The men, both in their 30s, were arrested after police seized nearly 17 grams of crack cocaine and more than $1,000 in cash on Feb. 13.

The seized drugs were equivalent to about 50 individual street doses of crack cocaine, police said.

A 36-year-old man was charged with drug possession and has been released.A 32-year-old man, who remains in custody,was charged with drug trafficking and drug possession for the purpose of trafficking.
