Kugluktuk, Nunavut, hosts territorial premiers' meetings

Canada's three Northern premiers have converged in Nunavut's Kitikmeot region, preparing for an upcoming Council of the Federation meeting next month.

The premiers Nunavut's Peter Taptuna, Yukon's Darrell Pasloski, and Northwest Territories' Bob McLeod are in Kugluktuk for two days of meetings, which end today.

Premier Taptuna represents the constituency of Kugluktuk, his hometown, in the Nunavut Legislative Assembly.

Taptuna says the meetings are a chance for the three territories to present a common front on certain issues during the Council of the Federation meeting, which includes all of Canada's premiers.

"Pan-territorially, we've been making a lot of headway, and we'll continue pushing our files forward," says Taptuna. "We have common themes and common issues we want to bring forth."

Those issues, said Taptuna, include infrastructure and energy.

The next Council of the Federation meeting is slated for July 15 to 17 in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador.
