Iqaluit water shutdown stretches into second day

Iqaluit is advising residents that an emergency water shutdown that began Saturday is still in effect. Residents can pick up water and take showers at the Arctic Winter Games arena.

The City ofIqaluit is advising residents that an emergency water shutdown that began Saturday is still in place Sunday morning.

To deal with the shutdown, the city is making water available at the Arctic Winter Games arena. Residents in the affected areas can fill up their own containers, and take showers at the arena, until 6:00 p.m. tonight.

The city is also trucking water to affected areas.

The shutdown began Saturday morning, when crews discovered a water main leak. In the process of fixing that leak, city workers found additional leaks, the city said in a news release.

The water shutdown includes most public and commercial buildings in the city centre, as well as residential areas in the 100s, 200s and 300s near the city's core.
