RCMP arrest man after daylong standoff in Iqaluit

RCMP officers in Iqaluit have arrested a man and taken three young children into the custody of Child and Family Services following a daylong standoff in the city Wednesday.

Police had asked public to avoid section of Nipisa Street earlier on Wednesday

RCMP officers in Iqaluit have arrested a man and taken three young children into the custody of Child and Family Services following a daylong standoff in the city Wednesday.

Early on Wednesday, police had asked the public to avoid the area between 135 and 141 NipisaSt., as they dealt witha person barricaded insidea home in the area.

Police had blocked off a section of road near the city's 300 block and evacuated homes in the area. Two school busesdelivering students to theneighbourhood were cancelled by police, and parents were asked to make other arrangements to get them home.

According to a news release sent at7:35 p.m. local time, RCMP said people canreturn to their homes.

Police thanked the people of Iqaluit for their patience, and said more information would be provided on Thursday morning.
