2 arrested after 'suspicious' Inuvik house fire leads to drug bust

Two people were arrested after a house fire in Inuvik. RCMP entered the residence and found 'indicators of illegal drug activity.'

Inuvik RCMP say a "suspicious" house fire on Friday has led to a drug investigation and two people charged with possession of drugs for the purpose of trafficking.

In apress release,RCMP said they responded to a fire around 5.40 a.m. on April15at a house on Ruyant Crescent.

Inuvik's fire department confirmed the fire started at the back of a trailer on 49 Ruyant Cres. and caused minor damage.

After the fire was extinguished, RCMP entered the residence and found, "indicators of illegal drug activity."

Police secured the residence and then executed a search warrant later that day. Theyfound 1.3 kilograms of marijuana and other items related to the sale of illegal drugs.

A man and a woman were charged and were released by a Justice of the Peace. Theyare expected to appear in Inuvik Territorial Court on July 12.

This is Inuvik's fifth suspicious fire in about a month. Just before the Friday trailer fire, the fire department said it responded to another "suspicious" vehicle fire at 8 Union St.
