Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada president acclaimed

Duane Smith has been acclaimed to a fourth term as president of the Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada.

Duane Smith has been acclaimed as the president of Inuit Circumpolar Council Canada.

Smith, who grew up in Inuvik, was the only nominee for the position when the nomination periodclosed on Friday.

Smith begins his fourth term at the helm of ICC Canada on July 25. He was first elected to the position in 2002.

Two people are vying for the position of vice-president, international affairs at ICC Canada.

Vernon B. Amos and Herb Nakimayak are also from the Inuvialuit Settlement Region.

The election will take place at the organization's annual general meeting in Inuvik on July 19.

Meanwhile Okalik Eegeesiak will become the international chair of Inuit Circumpolar Council when Inuit from around the arctic gatherin Inuvik next month. She will represent Inuit from Canada, Greenland, Russia and Alaska. The position as the international chairrotates between the four regions every four years.
