Haines Junction, Yukon, mayor resigns over infighting

The former mayor of Haines Junction, Yukon, says he resigned over personnel issues.

George Nassiopoulus saidsome councillors in the village were unprofessional and not prepared to follow the procedures outlined in the Yukon Municipal Act.

Nassiopoulus saidthings came to a head when he approached a contractor about some work that was scheduled in the community.

"Then instead of following proper procedures, the councillors took it upon themselves to try to deal with it and complained about me instead of dealing with the CAO.In the end, they circumvented the CAO completely and we ended up in a meeting that was not acrimonious, but was certainly annoying," he said.

Nassiopoulus quit just days after Chief Administrative Officer Michael Riseborough tendered his immediate resignation.

Mike Crawshay, is now acting mayor and acting chief administrative officer. He was the deputy mayor.

"So, I don't quite know how I am going to be juggling that and running my own business, but I'm up for the challenge," he said.

Crawshay saidhe will call a council meeting as soon as possible to decide if itwants to accept administrative help from the territorial government. Itwill also begin the process of calling a by-election to fill the vacant mayor's position.

He expects voters will be going to the polls in early November.
