Government confident Dawson City plant will meet expectations

The Yukon government says safety problems at the waste water treatment plant in Dawson City have been sorted out.

Safety inspectors were called to the plant earlier this month after a sub-contractor was found alone in an enclosed tank without proper safety gear.

The next day, inspectors accidentally set off an internal security alarm.

Corrix, the plant's operator, says it is complying with a Yukon Workers' Compensation Health and Safety Board order issued after the incidents.

Department of Public Works spokesperson, Doris Wurfbaum, says the government is confident the plant will meet expectations, despite failing to pass water quality tests for two years.

We're committed to the plant and its technology and we'll continue to work together to ensure that the plant is meeting the terms of its water licence.

The Yukon government and the contractor will continue to operate and pay for the plant until it meets water quality tests for three months in a row.

Only then will the facility be handed-over to the town of Dawson City to operate.
