George Hickes, Joe Savikataaq elected to Nunavut cabinet

Nunavut MLAs votedGeorge Hickes and Joe Savikataaq into cabinet Monday evening, following the resignation of JeannieUgyuk.

Hickes is MLA for Iqaluit-Tasiluk, whileSavikataaq is MLA for Arviat South.

Premier Peter Taptuna commended the MLAs for putting their names forward for cabinet, saying it takes a lot of "willpower."

"It's been a tough few days through our session," Taptuna said.

The election of two new ministers brings the total number of cabinet members in the Nunavut government to nine, and the number from Iqaluit to three.

"Once you join the executive council, you're there for all of Nunavut," Taptuna said.

Hickes thanked everyone for trusting him with the responsibility.

"It was literally a last minute decision," Hickes said.

"I didn't anticipate this, but I had some people convince me that I could still speak to the issues, but even more so, I could bring some action to resolve some of the issues."

Savikataaq said he feels humbled and privileged, and he'll do his best to answer MLAs' questions.

"As a regular MLA that's the most frustrating part is not getting an answer," Savikataaq said.

"I'll give them an answer. It might not be the answer they want, but I will give them an answer."

'Most folks were taken aback'

JeannieUgyuk, MLA for Netsilik and minister of Family Services,resigned earlier Monday after a vote of non-confidence during the mid-term leadership review on Saturday.

The premier said it was unfortunate that she resigned as MLA.

"She did a pretty good job as a regular MLA for the last three years before she joined cabinet," Taptuna said Monday night.

"I think most folks were taken aback a bit, but that's her decision and we respect her decision."
