Former Sanikiluaq teacher denied bail on sex charges

A former elementary school teacher from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut,facing 40 sex-related charges has been denied bail.

Johnny Meeko appeared in court in Iqaluit Thursday afternoon.

The 58-year-old taught at Nuiyak School.

Justice of the Peace Nicole Sikma denied Meeko's request to be released to Kuujjuarapik, Que. He wanted to stay there with family until his next court date.

Meeko will remain in custody in Iqaluit until he makes his first appearance before a judge on Oct. 2.
