Faro, Yukon, to get new police station

A new police station is in the works for Faro, Yukon, the first new detachment planned following an assessment of police buildings in the territory conducted last year.

A new police station is in the works for Faro, Yukon, thefirst new detachment planned following an assessment of police buildings in the territory conducted last year.

RCMP Insp.Al Lucier saysthe old building serving the policing needs of the community of 344 people is no longer up to standard.

"It doesn't have access for people with disabilities," he said. "The working area is not contemporary with modern policing, nor does it provide the resources to the community that support public safety. So a new building with modern design and built for the purposes and needs of Faro will address all of those issues."

The project will be funded by the territory and the federal government through the Territorial Police Services Agreement.

The building is still in the planning stage, with construction planned to begin in2015.

The old building will continue to be used until the new one is complete.
