Community cleans up vandalized school in Fort Providence

People in Fort Providence spent what was supposed to be the first day of school cleaning up after someone broke into the the Deh Gah school in the middle of the night.

They poured paint up and down hallways and on carpets and on 30 new iMac computers.

The school asked for volunteers to help clean things up.

"At first we thought this is a really crappy way to start our school year, says vice-principal Jim Snider. In the end, this act forced everybody to come together and work together and work side by side and tomorrow we've got elders coming in and they're going to perform a cleansing ceremony and the whole school is going to participate in that."

RCMP closed the school yesterday and brought a team in from Yellowknife to investigate.

Police are asking anyone with information about the vandalism to call Crimestoppers.
