Clyde River's Amosie Sivugat wins 2015 Nunavut Quest

Amosie Sivugat, from Clyde River, has emerged victorious in the 2015 Nunavut Quest.

This year's Quest, a traditional Inuit sled dog race established shortly after Nunavutbecame a territory in 1999, had racers and their teams travel from Pond Inlet to Arctic Bay, around the northern tip of Baffin Island.

Sivugat, who won the 500-kilometrerace in 34 hours, 39 minutes, and 39 seconds, says that the race trail was smooth, and that his entire team finished happy and healthy.

"Once we left Pond Inlet, I was sitting at third place," says Sivugat. "I was running in first every now and then, but, eventually, when we were reaching the end, I just started leading. We had a great time as we were racing."

Eleven teams took part in this year's Quest, with racers hailing from Arctic Bay, Pond Inlet, Clyde River, and Igloolik.Each team had two helpers, who carried supplies alongside the teams on snowmobiles.

The race began in Pond Inlet on April 21. Sivugatcrossed the finish line Mondayseven days later but race officials calculated times and penalties before announcing the winners Tuesday night.
