Fort McPherson ferry back in service after closing due to high water levels

The Abraham Francis ferry at Fort McPherson, N.W.T., is back in serviceafter it closeddue to high water levels on the Peel River.

The department closed the ferry at 9 a.m. on Monday. It was reopened as of 10:50 a.m. Tuesday, according to a spokeswoman forthe N.W.T. Department of Transportation.

Heavy rainfall had caused water levels to rise dramatically.

"Anytime the water levels become high it impacts our landings," said Jayleen Robertson, acting deputy minister for the Department of Transportation.

"We also get heavier flow rates, stronger currents and when the water is this high there is also quite a bit of debris that is coming down that river, which could present some safety concerns."

The ferry service runs from early June to the end of October and operates on demand.
