Trepassey construction company charged in 2015 death of worker

A year after 20-year-old CJ Curtis fell to his death following a roofing accident in Trepassey, his employer is now facing charges for violating the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

On Friday, Service NL announced that Southern Construction (1981) Ltd. has been charged with four counts that allege the company failed to provide a safe workplace, ensure workers were made familiar with the hazards, ensure fall protection was used, and that work areas were arranged to allow the safe movement of workers.

Curtis died after falling through a skylight onto a concrete floor on June 16, 2015 at the Glamox Lighting building in Trespassey.

Police said at the time that Curtis was not wearing a harness.

Service NL said the first court appearance for the company is scheduled for Nov. 25 at provincial court in St. John's.
