Williams back on job after heart surgery

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams returned to work on Monday, six weeks after triggering a firestorm over medicare.

Newfoundland and Labrador Premier Danny Williams returned to work on Monday, six weeks after triggering a firestorm over medicare.

Williams, 60, flew to the U.S. in early February for emergency heart surgery, and has been recuperating since.

Williams's decision to have the surgeryperformed in Florida set off a fiery debate, with some conservative U.S. critics callinghim a hypocrite for turning his back on Canada's public health-care system.

Williams, who describes himself routinely as a strong supporter of medicare, has said his medical team suggested that the procedure be done in the U.S., and did not offer an option of having it done in Canada.

In a statement Monday, Williams thanked Natural Resources Minister Kathy Dunderdale, who had served as acting premier in his absence.

"I was completely overwhelmed and touched by the incredible outpouring of support and prayers during this time," Williams said in a statement.

"I wish to sincerely thank each and every individual who took the time to write or call my office, and for the many expressions of well wishes that were passed along."

A public opinion poll released last week showed that voter support for Williams reached a record high during February, as he was recovering from heart surgery.
