To Mitchell McDonald of Portugal Cove-St. Phillips, wooden pallets are giant Lego blocks.

A bit of Google and a little creativity goes a long way, says Mitchell McDonald.

To Mitchell McDonald of Portugal Cove-St. Phillips, wooden pallets are giant Lego blocks.

"If you Google anything with pallets, you can make essentially anything," said McDonald.

Looking to the internet for inspiration, McDonald decided to create large wall hangings depicting Newfoundland and Labrador's official flag.

He lays out frames for the flag borders, cuts pieces of wood to fit inand then stains the completed design.

McDonald said wooden pallets are easy to find, as many businesses use them to have goods shipped in, and then rarely reuse them.

"Just make a few phone calls, and get yourself a truckload."
