What are you at? Darryl Chislett's vintage model ships

Darryl Chislett of the Kilbridearea of St. John's says building model ships requires a keen interest in history.

"A good model ship builder knows his time period, knows his history, knows how history affected[the ship]," said Chislett.

He has been researching and building replicas of lesser known historical ships from scratch.

Some of his projects include an Inuit ship called a umiak, a 1750s-era Dutch ship called a buss, and a 19th century West Country ketch.

Chislett said he incorporates materials that would have been used in construction of the actual ships in the time period, including wood, animal pelts and bone.

"I can come down to my workshop seven o'clock in the morning and go up five or six o'clock, and it's a day well spent," said Chislett.

"This is Zen, this is meditation."
