St. John's street reopens after assault investigation

A section of a downtown St. John's street was cordoned off Thursday after what appears to be a violent incident outside a bar.

Five police carsarrived at the scene and blocked off a section of Duckworth Street near the Crazy Horse, a bar and strip club. The street has since been reopened and the police have moved inside the bar.

Members of theRoyal Newfoundland Constabulary's criminal investigation division were putting down markers where there were two large stains of blood on the pavement.

One man was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

"I saw him in the road. He was laying in the street on his back," witness Gerry Johnsontold reporters.

Const. Paul Davis said police believe the incident started inside the building.

"We don't know how the person became injured. That's all part of what we are investigating. We haven't made those conclusions yet. But we do believe that the injury did occur inside this establishment. So that's where the investigation is leading us right now," he said.

It was the second time Thursday that the RNC was called to the Crazy Horse, though police say the two incidents were unrelated.

Earlierin themorning, the police arrested two women in front of the bar. When the women got to the lockup, one of them became violent and kicked out the rear window of the police car.

The woman hasbeen charged with malicious damage.
