Speed likely not a factor in fatal crash

Police in St. John's believe that speed was probably not a cause of a collision Tuesday in which an out-of-control vehicle struck and killed a highway worker.

A middle-aged man was killed on the edgeof the Outer Ring Road when a sport utility vehicle lost control and veered off the highway.

The man was working for the provincial transportation department.

The vehicle struck two othermen, who were listed in serious condition.

"Although early in the investigation, it does not appear that speed was a factor, but a mechanical inspection of the vehicle and analysis of the accident investigation evidence will make the final determination," Const. Suzanne FitzGerald of the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary told CBC News in an email.

It was raining around the time of the midday incident, near the Thorburn Road interchange.

Responding crews neededto close both eastbound and westbound lanes of the Outer Ring Road, with at least some sections closed for more than seven hours.

Police said there were no signs that the driver was impaired.

Meanwhile, in a statement Wednesday, Transportation Minister Tom Hedderson said "it was a terrible shock" to learn of the collision.

"I extend my deepest condolences to the family, friends and co-workers of our valued employee - a dedicated public servant who lost his life while serving the people of this province," Hedderson said.

"My thoughts and prayers are with them and also with the families and friends of the two injured individuals."

Hedderson said the government will not comment on the incident until the investigation is completed.

The vehicle will undergo a full mechanical inspection.
