Men charged in home invasions held in custody for next court appearances

Two men are facing a lengthy list of charges following two violent home invasions in St. John's on Monday evening.

Jonathon Hurley and Justin Haynes,both of St. John's, were arrested separately overnight in the citywithout incident, say police, who didn't provide any other details about the arrests.

Hurley, 32,and Haynes, 31,both appeared in provincial court in St. John's on Wednesday afternoon. Both are charged with two counts of breaking and entering, three counts of assault, one count of robbery, and one count of uttering threats.

Haynes is also charged with four counts of breaching release orders, two counts of fraud, and two counts of possession of property obtained by crime. Hurley is also facing a charge of aggravated assault and a charge of assault with a weapon.

The two men appeared in court Wednesday afternoon to have the charges read and were remanded in custody to await their next court dates. Haynes is due back Sept. 28 while Hurley is due back the following day.

A third suspect, believed to be present duringthe second home invasion, is still at large, said Const. James Cadigan, the RNC's media relations officer, at a news conference Wednesday morning announcing the arrests.

"At this time we continue to seek information on that individual, and the investigation is ongoing," he said.

On Tuesday, the RNC said three people were at large in relation to the invasions, which sent one manto hospital after astabbing. As of Tuesday, the man was in serious condition. Cadigan didn't have an update on his condition Wednesday.

The first incident took place onBeaumont Street in the city's centrejust before 8 p.m. on Monday. Shortly after, around 8:15 p.m., a second violent invasion happenedon Maunder's Lane in the city's east end.

Cadigan said Wednesday there's no evidence the people whose homes were invaded knew the accused.

"There's no association or link between the victims and the accused here," he said.

Cadigan said police are continuing to collect evidence, including video, and gathering tips from the public.

"Our officers are on the ground and utilizing all of their investigative techniques to further investigate this event," he said.
