Release of Turner death review delayed

A reporton the death of Zachary Turner who was drowned by his fugitive mother in 2003 has been delayed.

The child death review by Ontario-based coroner Peter Markesteyn was scheduled to be released next week.

Child advocate Darlene Neville said Tuesday there has been a delay. No new date has been given for the document's release.

The Newfoundland and Labrador government appointed Markesteyn last year to review the Turner case.

Shirley Turner, who was fighting extradition to the United States to stand trial for the murder of her estranged lover, Andrew Bagby, drowned herself and her 13-month-old son off a beach in Conception Bay South.

Turner left the United States before authorities there could apprehend her. Turner was pregnant with Bagby's child at the time.

Turner was free on bail during much of the time she fought extradition, and had been given permission to be with her son.

The parents of Andrew Bagby have campaigned for an investigation into the case, and for changes to prevent a criminal suspect from having unsupervised care of others.

In March, the College of Physicians and Surgeons disciplinedTurner's psychiatrist,John Doucet, for posting bail on his client's behalf.
