Raymond Stacey seeks medical treatment on 1st day of trial

The first day of Raymond Stacey's second-degree murder trial in the deathof Clifford Comerford has been interrupted, as the accused seeks medical treatment.

After being delayed Monday with requests for exemptions from some jurors, the trial got underway Tuesday at Newfoundland and Labrador Supreme Court in St. John's, with Stacey being read his charge and Justice Garrett Handrigan giving instruction to the jury.

Opening remarks from the Crown were scheduled to take place at 2:30 p.m., following a recess.

When the jury arrived back in the courtroom, however, they were informed proceedings had been delayed.

Stacey, 25, is accused of fatally stabbing a co-worker, CliffordComerford, in Mount Pearl in January 2015.

Handriganadvised the juryto pay attention to the facts, pay attention to witnesses' attitudes, and ignore the media.

Before Monday, the jury had been made up of 10 women and four men, with two alternates both men. With the actual start of the trial Tuesday, the jury sits as 10 women and three men.

Handrigan warned the jury of the possible need to be sequestered, and told jurors they're not to discuss the case with anyone, and should wait to discuss it with jurors until they start their deliberations.

Proceedings are scheduled to pick up again on Wednesday.
