Polar bear warning for Baie Verte Peninsula

Newfoundland and Labradorofficials have issued a polar bear warningforthe La Scie area of the Baie Verte Peninsula.

The bear was seennear the community of La Scie around cabins on an access road known locally as the Site Road.

Conservation officers are monitoring the movement of the bear.They are warningpeople in the area not approachit, and offered this advice to anyone who encounters a polar bear:

• Remain calm;
• Give the bear(s) space;
• Back away, get out of the situation, never run;
• If you must speak, do so calmly and firmly; and,
• Avoid direct eye contact with the bear(s)

A polar bearwas killedby provincial conservation officers Thursday on the Northern Peninsula near Goose Cove.

The bear tried to enter at least four homes and killed animals at a nearby farm before it was shot.

Last year, a polar bearwas killedin the coastal Labrador community of Hopedale.
