An exhibit of quilts this weekend at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay, tells the story about Newfoundlanders and their role in the First World War.

Peace by Piece, an exhibit showcasing a collection of quilts commemorating the First World War held its grand opening Saturday, honouring the men and women involved in the Great War.

The 17 quilts are now on display, made up of some 250 blocks that each depict some meaning to the creator of the block.

"Newfoundland is a very small place, it still has a small population, and everyone in this project, almost, can trace back to somebody who was impacted by the war," said Elsa Flack of Cabot Quilters

Flack said the project has been a two year journey and it is a rewarding experience to see the grand opening of the exhibit.

She said each quilt represents its own theme, but one special quilt in particular includes the names of all the soldiers who fought at Beaumont Hamel.

"We wanted to particularly pay attention to the Battle of the Somme, which was such a huge, significant landmark event for Newfoundlanders," Flack said.

"The bravery of Newfoundland soldiers will always be remembered, and we are honouring their bravery."

Flack said her group is still looking for a final home for the project, and if one can't be found, the quilts will be auctioned off, with the proceeds going to a charity supporting veterans.

The quilts will also be on display for the public on Saturday and Sunday at the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay.
