Federal carbon tax hike bumps gas, diesel up by over 3 cents in N.L.

Increases to the federal carbon tax came into effect Monday, which also means increases to fuel prices in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Ottawa'scarbon tax has climbed from around 14 cents to more than 17 cents per litre, and will apply to gasoline and diesel in Newfoundland and Labrador.

As a result, the price of gas has increased 3.8 cents per litre, raising the price of a litre of unleaded fuel on the Avalon Peninsula to $1.824.

Prices vary across the rest of the province, ranging from $1.82 to $1.99 per litre in Newfoundland and from $1.77 to $2.15 per litre in Labrador.

The price of diesel increased by 4.7 cents per litre. Prices for the fuel now range from $2.10 to $2.22 per litre in Newfoundland and from $2.16 to $2.59 per litre in Labrador.

Furnace oil and stove oil heating fuels are currently exempt from the federal carbon tax.

As for propane heating fuel, the federal carbon tax rate has caused an increased of 2.32 cents per litre, plus applicable HST.
