'Pony wreaths' launched as Christmas fundraiser for Newfoundland pony group

The Newfoundland Pony Society is looking for people to help protect the once-threatenedanimal, with a special item of Christmas decor.

The society is selling "pony wreaths"to raise moneyto support the province's only heritage animal.

"We're looking at the establishment of an emergency rescue fund, we would like to support ponies that are in foster care a little bit better," saidPamela Pippy, the society's treasurer, addingthat more can be done to support the ponies.

Pippysaid the group is also looking at using the money to improve promotional material on the ponies and continue to improve the registry of Newfoundland ponies.

There are currently 748 ponies on the list, but she saidonly about 400 are left worldwide.

It can also be expensive to own one of these ponies, according to Pippy.

"While they don't eat much, and they are easy keepers, you still have to give them food and water," she said in an interview.

"They still need regular vet care, farrier care, so it's not an animal that you would undertake lightly if your finances are low."

The pony wreaths are made locally by Daphne Thomas of Hodge River Nursery in Markland. Thesociety has received about 60 orders so far, but can produce as many as are needed.

The wreaths can be ordered by Friday, at a cost of $46.95. Payments can be madeonline at www.newfoundlandpony.com or by cheque.

The wreaths will be available for pick up on Dec.5inClarenville, and on Dec.6in St. John's.

They can also be shipped, and orders have been placed from as far away as Manitoba.
