The NDP's leader in Newfoundland and Labrador has a mixed reaction to news that Danny Williams's former communications director, Elizabeth Matthews, could become the next Vice Chair of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.

Lorraine Michael said she would like tosee a woman appointed to the position, but the Board needs a Vice Chair with experience in offshore safety, not communications.

"I would have liked to have seen someone who had a background in marine safety and had an in-depth knowledge not just a general knowledge. I'm sure Miss Matthews has a general knowledge but I think the C-NLOPB needs people with a really in depth knowledge around marine safety," she said.

Elizabeth Matthews (left), pictured with then Premier Danny Williams, is said to be the province's choice for a job with the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board.
The C-NLOPB appointment would be for six years. The vice-chair of the federal-provincial board receives an annualsalary in the $165,000 to $195,000 range.
