The Newfoundland and Labrador government is ready to join many other provinces to create regulations for midwives.

The province released a report on Thursday that it said would help guide the process to creating the guidelines.

However, expectant mothers and families may be waiting years before the process is completed.

The report was done by two consultants from McMaster University in Hamilton, On. and submitted to the provincial government in December 2012.

An advisory group will be set up to help initiate the process, but regulated midwives are not expected to be in the system for another five to seven years.

Newfoundland and Labrador is one of only three regions in the country without regulated midwives.
