Jenny Brake remains chief of Qalipu First Nation in N.L. following election win

Jenny Brake has been elected chief of Qalipu First Nation, and will remain in the role she's held on an interim basis since December.

Brake defeated candidates Laura White and Byron Alexander to be named chief. The winner was revealed by Qalipu on Friday evening after one week of online and telephone voting.

Brake received 2,871 votes, while Alexander received 1,650 votes and White received 490 votes.

Brake has served as interim chief since December, and is the first female chief of theQalipuFirst Nation. She's held the position since former chief Brendan Mitchell stepped down to become Newfoundland'sfirst regional chief for the Assembly of First Nations.

Qalipu is made up of 67 communities in Newfoundland and Labrador spread out over nine electoral wards. Itis one of Canada's largest bands by membership.

A spokesperson for Qalipu Nation told CBC News earlier this week there were 22,331 eligible voters in the election.

Members also elected band councillors for eight of the nine wards. Five candidates won by acclamation, while a byelection in the ward of St. George's will happen at a later date.

The results of Friday's election will be certified in 30 days.
