Jason Churchill jailed for smashing wife with beer bottle

A Paradise man who smashed a beer bottle over his wife's head, leaving her with a split cornea and blurred vision, was sentenced to just under two years in jail Thursday.

Jason Churchill, 41, was convicted of aggravated assault in the August 2014 attack on Joan Barry.

A judge sentenced Churchill to22 months in jail, followed by three years probation.

Barry, who was visibly shaken during the sentencing, told CBC News she is still worried.

"I feel conflicted because, yes, he's sentenced but what happens when he gets out,right?"

"Hopefully he'll follow his probation orders and everything that's been given in court," Barry said.

The Crown had asked for a two- to three-year sentence. The defence wanted Churchill to serve a 90-day sentence to be served on weekends, followed by a year of probation.

At the time of the sentencing hearing earlier this month,Barry felt that neither recommended sentence waslong enough.

In an interview with CBC News in October,Barry said she suffered multiple verbal and physical assaults over the years at the hands of her husband, including broken bones.

Last year's attack, however,isthe first timeChurchill has been charged.
