IOC charged under Fisheries Act, fined $30K

The Iron Ore Company of Canada has been ordered to pay $30,000, after pleading guilty to offences under the Fisheries Act related to the Metal Mining Effluent Regulations.

Environment Canada says the company did not have permission to release mining effluent into Luce Lake in Labrador City during the fall of 2012.

IOC also failed to provide a written report to an inspector within 30 days of the unauthorized release.

The company was fined $15,000, and has to pay another $15,000 to the Environmental Damages Fund.

As a result of the conviction, the company's name will be added to the Environmental Offenders Registry.
