'Sudden death' of 35-year-old inmate happened after he was taken to hospital, says Justice Department

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary confirmed that a 35-year-oldinmate died atHer Majesty's Penitentiary over the weekend.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has confirmed that a 35-year-oldinmate ofHer Majesty's Penitentiarydied over the weekend.

Const. James Cadigan the constabulary's media relations officer told CBC News on Sunday that police responded to a report of a "sudden death" at the prison Saturday morning.

Cadigan said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is working to determinethe cause of death and police are waiting for that report to determinewhether further action is required.

In a statement later Sunday,Department of Justice spokesperson Eric Humbersaidthe man diedafter he was taken to the hospital on Saturday.

"An investigation is underway and no further details will be provided at this time," said Humber.
