The cost of driving in Newfoundland and Labrador became noticeably cheaper Thursday, as the province's fuels regulator ordered retailers to drop their prices by up to 3.6 cents a litre.

The drop, the biggest since August, brings gas prices to their lowest point since mid-January.

On the Avalon Peninsula, where gas is cheapest, that means a stationcan now charge no more than $1.032 for a litre of self-serve unleaded gasoline.

Some retailers - particularly in the east end of St. John's, driven by market-leading Costco - have been charging less than $1 per litre for the last several days.

The Public Utilities Board also ordered a 3.2 cent-per-litre cut in the cost of diesel.

Furnace oil is down Thursday by 2.38 cents per litre.
