Fire breaks out at IOC mine in Labrador West

Emergency crews worked for hours to contain a large fire that broke out early Sunday morning at the Iron Ore Company of Canada mine in Labrador City.

According to a post shared onIOC'sFacebookpage shortly before 9 a.m., "a fire response effort" was underway in the pellet plant loadoutarea.

Access to the site wasrestricted asemergencycrews worked to contain the fire.

CBC News received reports that the fire started around 2:30 a.m.

Sources say operations shut down around 5 a.m., and some workers were temporarily sent home.

Fire crews from Labrador City worked alongside firefighters from the mine and, according to IOC, no one has been injured.

The fire comes on the same day that 50 to 60 mine workers are expected to be laid off.
