Caribou seized in poaching arrest near Merasheen Island

Charges are pending against two men caught tryingto make away with a butchered caribou fromMerasheenIslandin Placentia Bay.

Fish and Wildlife enforcement officers arrested the men, both from South East Bight, on Friday afternoon.

A spokesperson for the Department of Justice and Public Safety said one man was arrested on the water near MerasheenIsland, while the other man was apprehended on land as he loaded the caribou onto a boat.

Officers seized the quartered caribou, two rifles, ammunition, and a nearly5.8-metre motorized boat.

No charges have yet been laid, although the department saidthey are pending as the investigation continues.
