Late capelin roll attracts crowds to Middle Cove for unofficial start of summer

Dozens of people were at Middle Cove beach Monday evening to try and fill their buckets or coolers with capelin, the little silver fish that come to the shores of Newfoundland every summer to spawn.

Dozens of people were at Middle Cove beach Monday evening to try and fill their buckets or coolers with capelin, thesilver fish that come to the shores of Newfoundland every summer to spawn.

The Town of Logy Bay-Middle Cove-Outer Cove has long been a destination for people on the Avalon Peninsulato come with their friends and family to try and scoop up some of the little fish.

The rolling of the capelinalso attracts people from outside the province, who want to take in the annual Newfoundland tradition, and maybe get a meal in the process.

CBC's Mark Quinn was at Middle Cove beach on Monday, and while the catch wasn't great for most people that evening, they still enjoyedtheir experience taking part in what many consider to be the unofficial start of summer on the Avalon.
