Call to name St. John's bike lane after Layton

A St. John's man has launched a campaign to name one of the city's new bike lanes after former NDP leader Jack Layton.

A St. John's man has launched a campaign to name one of the city's new bike lanes after former NDP leader Jack Layton.

Musician Bill Brennan says Layton's life isan inspiration to people in this province.

Layton was a bicycling advocate, who rode his bike to work when he was a city councillor in Toronto and when he was an MP working in Ottawa.

Brennan said naming one particular lane that leads to Memorial University would be most appropriate.

"I think that particular area of the city will get a lot of bike use actually because it's quite flat over there," said Brennan.

Hesaid hes spoken with several St. Johns city councillors about the idea.

Layton, 61, had cancer. He died on Aug. 22.
