Domino effect suspected in fatal crash near Butter Pot Park

Police are investigating the cause of a crash on the Trans-Canada Highway Tuesday that killed a 52-year-old man.

Police are looking to speak to witnesses of a fatal crash on the Trans-Canada Highway near Butterpot Provincial Park Tuesday afternoon.

The RCMPsay it looks like a domino effect ledto the multi-vehicle crash Tuesdaynear Butter Pot Parkon theTrans-Canada Highway.

A 52-year-old man was killed.

Five vehiclesand 11 people were involved in the series of collisions, which occurred on the TCH southwest of St. John's around 4 p.m. Eastbound lanes were shut down for about seven hours.

The RCMPhave not said if the mandied because of the pileup, or was killed when his vehicle wentoff the road.

Cpl. TrevorO'Keefe saidit appears the vehicles started hitting each other from behind when a Good Samaritan pulled upto give assistance to the man.

Most of those involved in the accident have beenreleased from hospital.

Policehad two accident reconstructionanalysts at the scene.

RCMP are asking witnesses to contact the Holyrood detachment with any details of the collision.
