Arson likely as Bell Island abandoned house torched

RCMP believe that a fire, which broke out late Wednesday night on Bell Island, was no accident.

RCMP believe that a fire, which broke out late Wednesday night on Bell Island, was no accident.

Firefighters were called just after 11 p.m. to Ford Street in Wabana where a house that had no electricity was on fire.

Police said they suspect arson after speaking with eyewitnesses.

Jim Pendergast, chief of the Wabana volunteer fire department, said the house had been boarded up for about 25 years.

"When we got there, there was fire coming out of the south side of the building, downstairs and upstairs," he said.

"We contained it right away, so it wasn't really a big fire but it [caused] a bit of damage to the building. But the building was an old and dilapidated building anyway."

No one was hurt in the incident.
