Accused ear-biting fighter stays in jail

A man charged after a violent assault in St. John's has agreed to stay in custody until his next court appearance in June.

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary saidJason English, 30, bit off a piece of a one man's ear and headbutted another man during a brawl at downtown St. John's bar early Monday morning.

English has been charged with aggravated assault and uttering threats.

Defence lawyer Bill Collins told the provincial court Thursdaythat English is consenting to remain in custody for now.

English was under house arrest when the fight took place for a drug-related conviction in 2008.

The terms of his conditional sentence allowed English to visit his business, the Crazy Horse strip club at the east end of Duckworth Street in St. John's.

He was arrested at the other end of the downtown area, at a George Street bar called Spin.

The court had ordered English to stay away from three specific downtown bars: Junctions, Liquid Ice and the strip club Sirens.

The two men involved in the fight have been released from hospital. The man whose ear was bitten had plastic surgery.

English's case is scheduled back in court June 4.
