5 years later, looking back at Hurricane Igor

It was one of the biggest storms to hit eastern Newfoundland in recent history.

Hurricane Igor wreaked havoc across parts of the island when it struck Sept. 21, 2010, causing millions of dollars in damages.

Winds peaked at 172 km/h during the hurricane, and many people were evacuated from their homes.

Belongings were lost; roads, bridges and culverts washed away in the currents of flooded rivers after hundreds of millimetres of rainfall.

80-year-old Allan Duffett was killed in the storm when he was swept down a rain-swollen river on Random Island. His body was later recovered.

Hundreds of rural communities were cut off and tens of thousands were without power.
