More than 20,000 ballots were cast on the first day of advanced voting for the upcoming New Brunswick municipal elections.

The number of voters Saturday nearly reached the two-day total from the last election, when 26,000 people voted in advance.

"You have highs of 80 per cent in some communities," said Paul Harpelle of Elections New Brunswick. He said the turnout was highest in communities where there are major issues.

"For example, St. Stephen, where you have a fairly significant ballot, a mayoralty race taking place and a number of people putting their names forward to run as council."

Harpelle said Saturday's rainy weather and the fact it was during the weekend probably helped the turnout.

The second advance poll is Monday. Harpelle said the numbers may not be as high as Saturday because it's a work day.

New Brunswick voters will be going to the polls on May 14 to elect their mayors and councillors in 105 different municipalities.
