Perth-Andover high school students return to class

High school students in Perth-Andover will be returning to classes this week although they will not be finishing their year at Southern Victoria High, which was damaged in the recent flood.

The northwestern New Brunswickvillage was hit by a massive flood several weeks ago.

Elementary students have already gone back to school but high school students willstart heading back to class on Tuesday.

Grade 11 and 12 students will be travelling to Tobique Valley School in Plaster Rock, which is about 30 kilometres away.

And on Wednesday, Grade 9 and 10 students will start classes at John Caldwell School in Grand Falls, which is about 50 kilometres away.

Jenni-Lee McKellar is one of the students who will be heading to a new school.

She said she wants to go back to school, but is worried about the reception she and her Southern Victoria High classmates will get.

"Being out of school for two to three weeks is pretty bad. And I'm not sure how the schooling is going to go. If we're going to be in classes with Grand Falls students or what not. I'll see when I get there," said McKellar.

The Department of Education has already announced the Southern Victoria High School will remain closed until at least the end of June because the flood caused extensive damage to the heating and mechanical systems.

The flood causedabout 500 people in Pert-Andover to leave their homes. The flood level was roughly 1.5 metres higher than the last major flood in 1987.
