Storm Arthur victims to get financial relief

New Brunswick homeowners who had damage from post-tropical storm Arthur that is not covered by insurance can apply to the provincial government for disaster financial assistance.

Premier Brian Gallant and Public Safety Minister Stephen Horsman announced the compensation programWednesdaymorning.

The provincial government is also going to cover some of the costs for municipalities that had unplanned expenses, said Gallant.

The storm hit in early July and downed thousands of trees in the province, as well as power lines.

It also caused damage to homes, vehicles and other property.

The public safety department estimates the damage to public infrastructure at $12.6 million.

Most damage to private property was from the wind and should be covered by insurance, said Horsman.

But anyone who had damage not covered under an insurance policy can contact the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization, he said.

The deadline for applying for provincial help isFeb. 20.

The storm caused widespread power outages.

On July 5, NB Power had 140,000 customers without power. The Fredericton area was hardest hit in terms of power outages, with thousands of trees uprooted or breakingand becoming entangled with power lines.
