N.B. COVID-19 roundup: 2 new cases reported Saturday

Public Health is reporting two new cases of COVID-19 in New Brunswick on Saturday.

The cases are in the Fredericton region. One is a person in their 20s and the other a person in their30s.

Both are contacts ofa previously identified case.

The number of active cases in the province now stands at 122, with2,115 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

There have been1,949 recoveries and 43 deaths.

Seven are hospitalized, one outside of the province, with three in intensive care. The out-of-province case is one of the patients in intensive care.

On Friday,1,249 COVID-19 tests were done, bringing the testing total to322,731.

So far, 375,769 New Brunswickers have received one dose of COVID-19 vaccine.

Welcome to summer?

COVID-19 cases were on the rise as New Brunswick entered the May long weekend.

Premier Blaine Higgs said what kind of summer New Brunswick will have will be based on how the next few weeks play out.

"At the current projection of where we are, people should be planning on summer in New Brunswick," said Higgs in a media scrum Friday.

On Friday, the province also announced the second death related to blood clots linked to AstraZeneca vaccine.

The person in their 50s got the vaccine on April 11 and went to the hospital with symptoms of blood clots 17 days later.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Jennifer Russell said the personhad been listed as being hospitalized earlier and died recently.

"The risks associated with this product are rare but they are real, as we have seen today," said Russell.

But she stressed the risks from COVID far outweigh the risks from AstraZeneca vaccine.

What to do if you have a symptom

People concerned they might haveCOVID-19 symptoms cantake a self-assessment test online.

Public Health says symptoms shown by people withCOVID-19 have included:

• Fever above 38 C.

• New cough or worsening chronic cough.

• Sore throat.

• Runny nose.

• Headache.

• New onset of fatigue, muscle pain, diarrhea, loss of sense of taste or smell.

• Difficulty breathing.

In children, symptoms have also included purple markings on the fingers and toes.

People with one of those symptoms should:

• Stay at home.

• Describe symptoms and travel history.

• Follow instructions.
