Flood damage closes high school for remainder of year

South Victoria High School in Perth-Andover is being closed for the remainder of the school year in order to repair the building after last weeks flood.

School District 14 said in a statement that the building sustained damage to its heating and electrical system.

The school will be closed "at least [to] the end of June."

District officials are now working out a plan to accommodate students and staff in nearby communities.

"These plans will be communicated to parents and employees as soon as they are finalized," the district said in a statement.

"The district is also reviewing the bus routes in the area in an effort to minimize loss of academic time, and to ensure the safety of students as the condition of roadways is assessed."

There are roughly 350 people in the Grade 9 to 12 Southern Victoria High School.

While South Victoria High School will be closed for the remainder of the year, students in other Perth-Andover schools will be heading back to class.

Perth-Andover Middle School is reopening for class on Friday. The school had been used by the Canadian Red Cross as an emergency evacuation site during the flood.

Andover Elementary School is opening for regular classes as early as Monday. The building sustained less damage than originally thought, according to the district.

Many homes and businesses are just starting toassess the damage inflicted by last week's flood.

The record flood caused the village of 1,770 people to evacuate about one-third of the community on Friday. The flood level was roughly 1.5 metres higher than the last major flood in 1987.
