McAdam rattled by small earthquake

Natural Resources Canada confirms a small earthquake of a magnitude of 1.6

Residents of McAdam weren't imagining things if they felt the earth move last night.

Natural Resources Canada confirms a small earthquake of a magnitude of 1.6 shook parts of the village around 9:51 p.m. Sunday.

Seismologist Stephen Halchuk said NRC received three or four reports from residents who felt the shaking.

"We have reviewed the data from our recording instruments, and can confirm that there was a very small earthquake," he told CBC in an email.

Halchuk said the quake was centred about two kilometres northwest of McAdam and was only at a depth of one kilometre.

He says that makes it a very shallow quake and it "would only be large enough to be felt by residents in the immediate area."

The community is no stranger to earthquakes and felt a series of them in 2012.
