A Bromont municipal police officer has died after he was hit by a truck on the side of a road Thursday, Quebec provincial police say.

ABromont municipalpolice officer has died after he was hit by a truck on the side of a road Thursday, Quebec provincial policesay.

Vincent Roy, 37,had just stopped a vehicle for a highway infraction and was out of his car on the side of the road when he was struck by acubevan.

The accident happened at about 11:30 a.m.ET on Highway 139near Adamsville, Que., in the Eastern Townships about 100 kilometres southeast of Montreal.

"He was giving back the driver's licence, registration and insurance papers," said Sret du Qubec spokesman Louis-Philippe Ruel. "The truck left the road and went on to the shoulder and actually hit the patrol car first and afterwards hit the officer."

The truck remained on the scene as police investigated, and its femaledriver was interviewed by police at a nearby station.

Ruel saidneither alcohol and speeding were factors and police are treating the incident as an accident.

Roy leaves behind two children, aged8 and 10.The former RCMP officer had been working in Bromont for several months, police said.

Police and officials with the province's workplace health and safety board were on the scene investigating Thursday afternoon.

All 20officers in the Bromont police forceare being treated for shock and will not work for at least24 hours. Provincial policewill take over their shifts.
